This Oscar-winning documentary follows The Kon-Tiki Expedition. It is the story about Thor Heyerdahl, his five companions and the adventurous journey of crossing the Pacific Ocean, from Peru to Polynesia, on nine logs of balsa wood, at the mercy of the currents of the ocean and the directions of the wind. The Kon-Tiki raft was an accurate copy of the pre-historic vessels that the Indians used on the South-American west coast. The thick balsa logs were anchored to one another only by hemp rope, no nails or modern tools were used to construct the fleet. Named Kon-Tiki after the Peruvian sun king, it was build exactly like the natives would have done it in the year of 500. The expedition started in Peru the 28th of April 1947, and after drifting with the current and trade winds for 101 days, the raft stranded on one of the Polynesian islands on the 7th of August. Kon-Tiki is one of the best stories about modern Viking spirit and desire for adventure. With a secure grip on the facts and with a sprinkle of deadpan humor, Thor Heyerdahl has created a film that gives us valuable and exciting entertainment.
