Sørfond+/ South Fund+

Sørfond+ is managed by the Norwegian Film Institute in cooperation with Films from the South Foundation and is funded by the Creative Europe MEDIA sub-programme of the European Union and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nordic producers are especially encouraged to apply.

Why?

The main objective of Sørfond+ is to contribute to strengthening film as a cultural expression, to promoting diversity and artistic integrity on the international film scene, and to strengthening freedom of expression. The grant shall also contribute to an increased cooperation between the European and the international film industry.

The purpose of Sørfond+ grants is to stimulate the production of films in developing countries where such production is limited by political or economic causes.

Who?

Sørfond+ grants support to fiction and documentary projects over 60 minutes with a minority producers established in one of the MEDIA-participating countries and a main producer from one of the countries on the DAC-list of OECD*. Sørfond+ is a co-production fund for projects with subjects and shooting locations attached to Africa, Latin-America, Asia, the Middle-East and some countries in Eastern parts of Europe.

The application must be submitted by the minority producer with citizenship and an independent company established in one of the countries participating in the Creative Europe MEDIA sub-programme of the European Union.

The main producers must have ownership to the rights of the work and act as the delegate producer and minimum 50 % of the financing must be confirmed at the date of submission.

What?

Maximum grant per project is EUR 50.000 for fiction- and documentary projects produced for screening in the cinemas, on television or on other audiovisual platforms.

The assessment and selection of the application shall be based on an overall assessment of artistic, production-related, financial and technical aspects of the project; the quality of script and potentials of the projects, the experience and quality of the producers, the director and other key players, the nature of the co-production, as well as the feasibility of budget, financing plan, audience reach and innovative aspects.

Emphasis will be put on the purpose of Sørfond+, the project’s cultural identity, including the use of local languages and local shooting locations. Representation of women in key positions will be considered and Sørfond+ will especially encourage Nordic minority producers to apply.

A jury consisting of three to five members appointed by the Norwegian Film Institute processes the applications and nominates candidates to the Norwegian Film Institute that holds the decision-making power. At least one member from a DAC-country shall be represented in the jury.

The evaluation process will normally take 8-10 weeks from the relevant deadline.
