Among 30 local features premiered between 1 October, 2010-30 September, 2011, Norway’s Oscar committee has shortlisted three to be considered for an Oscar submission: Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st (Oslo, 31. august), Anne Sewitsky’s Happy, Happy (Sykt lykkelig) and Jens Lien’s Sons of Norway (Sønner av Norge).

Neither Trier nor Lien’s films have been launched domestically – they will both screen at the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund (between 21-26 August), before they are released on 31 August and 9 September, respectively, both through Norsk Filmdistribusjon. Sewitsky’s feature debut was out in November 2010; touring several international festivals, it won for Best International Film in Sundance.

Closing the Haugesund showcase, Oslo, August 31st had its world premiere in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes International Film Festival; it has also been selected for the Vanguard selection at the Toronto International Film Festival (8-18 September). Lien’s Sons of Norway will open the Norwegian fest August 21.

The Norwegian Oscar committee includes Espen Horn (Norwegian Film and TV Producers’ Association), Mona J. Hotel (Directors Guild of Norway), Sverre Pedersen (Norwegian Film Worker’s Association), Anders T Andersen (Norwegian Actor’s Equity Association), Monica Boracco Borring (Writers’ Guild of Norway), Øyvor Dalan Vik (Norwegian Film Critic’s Association) and Stine Helgeland (Norwegian Film Institute/chairman).
