Norsk filminstitutt

A film about three inspiring women fighting for social justice in an African American church in impoverished North Philadelphia. One day, a Mexican undocumented immigrant asks the church for sanctuary.

Over a period of two years, filmmaker Petr Lom follows the church soup kitchen's cook Mamie, volunteer and former Black Panther Barbara, and Pastor Renee during their daily activities.

The Church of the Advocate is a national monument with a rich history in the civil rights movement. When the undocumented Carmela asks for sanctuary to protect her and her four children from deportation, she is welcomed with open arms to live in the church. Reaching out across ethnic lines to work with Hispanics for the first time, Pastor Renee courageously defies the ICE immigration authorities.

A documentary about compassion that invites us to forget about all borders, be they of race, nationality or religion.
