Norsk filminstitutt

A film about risking everything for a better future.

Both brutal and beautifully poetic, this short film tells a story about escaping war and starting a new life in Norway. Shwan Dler Qaradaki´s drawings opens up a dialogue around the historical and current issues in the Kurdish region.

Shwan was a witness to the war. He arrived in Norway as a refugee in 1999 after two years of travelling through the Middle East and Europe. With this film he tells his story in a personal and approachable manner which differs from the media and news. The story Qaradaki tells his children and grandchildren consist of contrast both physical and psychological. Some of these are the wish of helping the ones in need in the home country, the bad conscious of leaving behind a sick mother contrary to the relief and contentment of being able to travel back to a safe family in Norway. The love for his ancestors and idea of Kurdistan opposed to his tragic memories growing up. An important part of the project is to raise discussion about relevant topics in current political and humanitarian challenges. Qaradaki shares his personal story not only about being a political refugee but also the challenges of different national identities and integration.
