Norsk filminstitutt

  • Tommy Wirkola

Tommy Wirkola (b. 1979) is a director and writer, known for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013), Dead Snow (2009) and Kill Buljo: The Movie (2007).

He holds a Bachelors degree in Film & Television from Bond University in Australia, and has also studied Media Sciences at Finnmark University College, and Film and Television Sciences at Lillehammer University College.

After directing several shorts, both on an amateur basis, and as part of his education, he made his debut as a feature film director with the low-budget Kill Buljo in 2007. The film was a spoof (and an homage) to amongst others Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films, but with a definitive twist of the typical humor of Wirkolas home region of Northern-Norway. The film, which Wirkola also co-wrote, edited, co-produced and acted in, sold a very respectable 90 000 tickets at the Norwegian box-office, and in excess of 95 000 DVD's. As such the film was an unconventional success, and paved the way for Wirkola's next films: Dead Snow (2009), and the mockumentary Kurt Josef Wagle and the Legend of the Fjord Witch (2010). Dead Snow, another box-office hit for Wirkola, was invited to the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, and became one of the best-selling Norwegian features until then, selling to 50 countries around the world.

Kurt Josef Wagle and the Legend of the Fjord Witch was based on another original screenplay by Wirkola and long-time creative partner Stig Frode Henriksen, which in turn was based on the series The Saga of Kurt Josef Wagle, also written and produced by the duo, and directed by Wirkola for web-TV-channel VG-TV. The film version did not fare as well in the box-office as Wirkola's previous movies, but nonetheless, he had made his mark in the "new wave" of Norwegian cinema of the "noughties", and was soon picked up by Hollywood. His first film in the U.S., Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters premiered in 2012.

Wirkola is also one of the co-founders and co-owners of the production company Tappeluft Pictures AS, which since 2010 has had a high output, producing films such as Tomme Tønner 1 + 2 (2010 and 2011), Graduates (2011) and You Said What? (2011).
