Joachim Trier's film Sentimental Value received a full 19-minute standing ovation during its world premiere in Cannes last night.
The film is in competition for the Palme D'Or, which will be awarded Saturday May 24.
“The expectations for this film were high, and the reception here in Cannes shows that Joachim Trier has outdone himself. We are in a golden age for Norwegian cinema, and this marks a new high point in the artistic journey of Joachim Trier and his creative collaborators,” says Kjersti Mo, Director of the Norwegian Film Institute.
A moved Joachim Trier thanked the audience, saying “What’s that Buñuel quote? ‘I make films for my friends’? I feel you’re all my friends tonight.”
Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father - and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
