Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value has been nominated for eight BAFTA Awards, including Best Film, Best Supporting Roles, and Best Actor. This number of BAFTA nominations marks a new record for a Norwegian film.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which presents the BAFTA Awards, announced today the final nominees after releasing its longlists earlier in January. On those longlists, Sentimental Value appeared in eight categories — the highest number for any European film this year.
Today’s announcement confirmed that Sentimental Value is nominated in all the categories in which it was longlisted: Best Film, Best Film Not in the English Language, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Leading Actress (Renate Reinsve), Best Supporting Actress (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), Best Supporting Actor (Stellan Skarsgård), and Best Casting.
“Sentimental Value’s BAFTA nominations are a strong recognition of Joachim Trier and the entire artistic team behind the film. The fact that it is nominated in so many major categories shows that this is a film that has made a deep impression internationally and is the result of a close artistic collaboration across borders — including BBC as a financial partner. This provides an excellent starting point for the film’s theatrical life in the UK,” says Kjersti Mo, Director of the Norwegian Film Institute.
The BAFTA Awards will be presented during a live broadcast on BBC on Sunday, 22 February — three weeks before the Oscars.
Previously, Sentimental Value has received nine Oscar nominations, won six European Film Awards, was nominated for eight Golden Globes and won one of them, and is also nominated for the Spanish Goya Awards for Best European Film.
