There will be a strong Norwegian Presence at the European Film Awards: Armand is nominated for the European Discovery FIPRESCI Award and the European University Film Award, Renate Reinsve is nominated for European Actress while Ibelin and Lars is LOL are nominated for the Young Audience Award. In addition, the Palestinian-Norwegian documentary No Other Land is nominated for both European Documentary and European Film.
In announcements from the European Film Academy this week, it was revealed that Norwegian films and filmmakers have received a record number of nominations at this year’s European Film Awards, which will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Saturday, December 7.
Armand tells the story of a six-year-old boy accused of crossing his best friend’s boundaries at elementary school. Armand's mother, Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve), is summoned to a parent-teacher meeting on short notice.
Her son is accused of something, but what exactly is unclear. Soon, the principal, the school nurse, and another set of parents are also involved in a meeting that quickly spirals out of control.
The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard program at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, where Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel became the first Norwegian to win the Caméra d'Or debut director prize. Armand is still playing in cinemas in Norway.
At the European Film Awards, Armand is nominated in the categories of European Discovery FIPRESCI, European University Film Award, and, notably, for European Actress, with Renate Reinsve as the nominee.
Armand is written and directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, starring Renate Reinsve, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Øystein Røger, Endre Hellestveit, Thea Lambrechts Vaulen, Vera Veljovic. The film is produced by Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for Eye Eye Pictures . The Norwegian distributor is Norsk Filmdistribusjon, and Charades is the international sales agent.
Armand is Norway`s Oscar contender.
Lars is LOL and Ibelin are two of the three films nominated for the European Young Audience Award at the European Film Awards.
For this year’s awards, three films were selected for nomination, two of which are Norwegian: Lars is LOL, directed by Eirik Sæter Stordahl, and Ibelin, directed by Benjamin Ree. The third nominated film is the German film Winners, directed by Soleen Yusef.
Now, 12- to 14-year-olds from 38 European countries will watch the films and then vote for which of the three they believe is the best European children's film. This will also be announced at the European Film Awards on December 7.
No Other Land follows a Palestinian activist who teams up with an Israeli investigative journalist. Together, they fight against Israel’s settlement policy, which daily displaces Palestinians in the West Bank and leaves them homeless.
The film is produced by Antipode Films, led by Fabien Greenberg and Bård Kjøge Rønning, and won the award for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the Berlinale, where it premiered in February 2024. It also won the International Award for Best Human Rights Film at the Human International Documentary Film Festival in Oslo, as well as audience awards at Vision du Reel in Switzerland and CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. At the European Film Awards, the documentary is nominated in the categories of European Documentary and European Film.
