Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value made Norwegian film history last night when the film won a Golden Globe during the awards ceremony in Los Angeles through an acting award for Stellan Skarsgård. This is the first time a Norwegian feature film has received a Golden Globe.
The Norwegian feature film Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier, was honored with a Golden Globe thanks to Stellan Skarsgård, who won the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.
The Golden Globes are considered one of the world’s most prestigious award platforms for film and television, and this prize marks yet another historic international breakthrough for Norwegian cinema.
Sentimental Value was nominated in eight categories, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director (Joachim Trier), Best Screenplay (Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt), as well as several acting categories.
Stellan Skarsgård won for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for his role as director and father Gustav Borg in Sentimental Value
Skarsgård received the award in competition with actors such as Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, and Adam Sandler. This was Skarsgård’s second Golden Globe award to date. In his acceptance speech, he urged everyone to watch this Norwegian film in a cinema, sharing the experience with others: “Cinema should be seen in a cinema.”
“This is a big day for Norwegian film. ThatSentimental Value wins a Golden Globe is a significant acknowledgment of the work of Joachim Trier, Stellan Skarsgård, and the entire team. The Golden Globes offer enormous international visibility, and this demonstrates the artistic strength of Norwegian film production. We are very proud and now look forward to the road toward Oscar nominations,” said Kjersti Mo, CEO of the Norwegian Film Institute.
The Golden Globe Awards are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are considered one of the most important international awards in the film and TV industry. This year’s gala was broadcast live on CBS from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
The closest a Norwegian film has previously come to a Golden Globe was when Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s Kon-Tiki (2012) was nominated. Norwegian director and Script Writer Mona Fastvold was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for The Brutalist in 2025. Liv Ullmann has been nominated five times as an actress and won the award for Best Actress in 1973 for her role in Swedish director Jan Troell’s film The Emigrants (Utvandrarna).
