Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value nominated for eight awards at the 2026 European Film Awards

Features

Joachim Trier’s acclaimed feature Sentimental Value receives nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriters, Best Actress and Best Actor at the 2026 European Film Awards.

Updated story: November 26, 2025. Three additional nominations for Sentimental Value were announced, bringing the total number from five to eight nominations.

“It was evident at this year’s Cannes festival – where Sentimental Value won the Grand Prix – that Joachim Trier and his team had made a film with broad international appeal. This has since been reinforced by strong box office results in Norway, Sweden, France, and the U.S. Five nominations at the European Film Awards represents yet more affirmation that Sentimental Value delivers exceptional quality on every level—and that it resonates with juries, audiences, and professionals across the global film industry,” says Kjersti Mo, CEO of the Norwegian Film Institute.

The 2026 European Film Awards nominations were announced on November 18 at the iconic Real Alcázar in Seville, during the 22nd Sevilla European Film Festival in Spain.

The Five Categories

Sentimental Value is nominated in the following categories:

  • Best European Film: Sentimental Value
  • Best European Director: Joachim Trier
  • Best European Screenwriter: Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier
  • Best European Actress: Renate Reinsve
  • Best European Actor: Stellan Skarsgård

The Three newly announced Categories

  • Best European Casting Director: Yngvill Kolset Haga & Avy Kaufman
  • Best European Composer (Original Score): Hania Rani
  • Best European Production Designer: Jørgen Stangebye Larsen

The European Film Awards are considered Europe’s version of the Oscars and are organized by the European Film Academy. The European Film Academy  is an industry organisation with 5,400 members, founded by European filmmakers in Berlin in 1988, to promote and recognize quality and creativity in European film production.

Sentimental Value had its world premiere in Cannes in May 2025, where it received a 19-minute standing ovation and became the first Norwegian film to win the Grand Prix.

Strong Box Office Performance in Norway and Internationally

Since its Norwegian premiere in September, Sentimental Value has attracted 235,000 Norwegian cinemagoers in nine weeks. Nearly 100,000 have seen the movie in Sweden, and in France it is approaching half a million viewers—almost double the cinema audiences for Triers previous film, the Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World in France. In the U.S., the film has also performed strongly since its November 7 premiere, achieving the highest box office numbers for a non-English-language film since before the pandemic.

In addition to these five nominations, it was announced earlier this autumn that legendary Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann will receive a European Lifetime Achievement Award, which will also be presented during the European Film Awards.

Nominated for the European Audience Award

Sentimental Value is also one of five films nominated for the LUX Audience Award 2026. The LUX Prize is Europe’s largest audience award for film and aims to foster dialogue and engagement on key societal issues reflecting shared European values such as democracy, rule of law, diversity, and freedom of expression. It is awarded annually by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy in cooperation with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network. Free screenings of the five shortlisted films will take place across all EU countries until April 2026. The winner of the LUX Audience Award 2026 will be announced at a ceremony in the European Parliament in Brussels in mid-April.

Strong Results for Norwegian Film at the European Film Awards

In 2024, Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s Armand, starring Renate Reinsve, won the Critics’ Discovery Award at the European Film Awards, Benjamin Ree’s The Remarkable Life of Ibelin won the Young Jury Award, and the Palestinian-Norwegian co-production No Other Land was named Best European Documentary. This marked a notable resurgence for Norwegian cinema at the European Film Awards, following a period of comparatively few EFA nominations.

The 38th European Film Awards ceremony will take place on January 17, 2026, in Berlin.

The 38th edition of the European Film Awards will take place on January 17, 2026, in Berlin. At the ceremony, Liv Ullmann will also receive the honorary European Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the art of film as an actress, screenwriter, and director.
