The Curse of Kane and Butterfly in Competition in Göteborg

The Norwegian monster film Kraken and the long-awaited documentary The Curse of Kane have been invited to the 49th Göteborg Film Festival (January 23 – February 1), which announced its program today. Also screening in Göteborg are the feature films Butterfly, Solomamma, Don’t Call me Mama, My First Love, Dawning, No Comment, and the documentary Trillion.

Göteborg Film Festival (January 23 – February 1) is the Nordic region’s largest audience festival and a key meeting place for the Nordic film industry, with over 2,000 accredited industry visitors from more than 50 countries. The festival also hosts one of the film world’s largest awards, the Dragon Award, where the winner of Best Feature Film receives SEK 400,000. A total of nine Norwegian feature-length films have been invited to this year’s festival in Göteborg.

The Curse of Kane

The documentary about Gunnar Ryan Wiik, The Curse of Kane, will have its world premiere at the Göteborg Film Festival on Wednesday, January 28. Directors Even G. Benestad and August B. Hanssen have followed the Norwegian entrepreneur Gunnar Ryan Wiik since 2017, when his spectacular film project about the western hero Morgan Kane collapsed and became front-page news in Norwegian newspapers. The Curse of Kane is the only Norwegian documentary competing for the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Documentary. The winner of this competition qualifies for the Oscars.

Kraken

Pål Øie’s monster thriller Kraken will have its international premiere in Göteborg with a gala screening, and is also showing in the Midnight Mania program. When a village in the Sognefjord is struck by mysterious events, marine biologist Johanne Berge (Sara Khorami) is reluctantly sent there to investigate. Strange natural phenomena, eerie sounds from the depths, and a tragic accident raise suspicions of something dangerous threatening the fjord.

Butterfly

Itonje Søimer Guttormsen’s new feature film Butterfly, starring Lillian Müller, Renate Reinsve, and Helene Bjørneby in key roles, is the only Norwegian feature invited to the main competition, Nordic Competition, and can therefore win the Dragon Award worth SEK 400,000. Butterfly will have its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival (January 29 – February 8) and will be released in Norway this autumn.

Films in several programs

The Norwegian feature films Solomamma, Don’t Call me Mama, My First Love, and Dawning will be shown in the Nordic Light program. Director Victor Kossakovsky’s new documentary Trillion will be screened in the Masters program. The political satire No Comment will be featured in the Focus: Truth program.

In addition, Norwegian director Dino Murselovic’s short film Echo of a Memory has been invited to the Swedish Shorts program.

Also in the main competition is The Last Resort, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Maria Sødahl and produced by Sigurd Mikal Karoliussen and Thomas Robsahm for Nordisk Film Production in Denmark.
