At a little farm in South Norway, Asgeir is struggling to overcome the sorrow of decades spent filming the melting Arctic. However, new life at his farm reignites his motivation to explore the state of nature in his own country. From winter to autumn, Asgeir embarks on a heartfelt quest to document what we might lose, even in Norway, where nature seems to thrive. From the flowerbeds at his home to vast mountain plateaus and steep bird cliffs, he invites us to immerse ourselves in the lives of reindeer, puffins and bees.
Our journey begins in the high mountains, following a flock of wild reindeer living on limited resources, starting their annual migration to their traditional calving areas. Asgeir captures the newborn calves' first unsteady steps, the challenges of longer and warmer summers, and the reindeer's powerful mating gatherings in the autumn. Seeing how humans have cut the mountains in pieces, Asgeir feels the clash between our extractive mentality and the needs of these freedom-loving nature nomads. A pair of puffins reunites at one of Norway’s most spectacular bird cliffs. Their flirting captures Asgeir, and he decides to follow them and find out whether they will manage to raise their only chick. Having filmed here for many years, he knows that despite the appearance of abundant life, seabird populations are drastically reduced. Against all odds, the little chick manages to survive and leaves the bird cliff healthy and strong. It is a small victory for life. The bees at his home allow Asgeir to delve into a micro-universe that he had not investigated much before.
Every time he returns home to tend to his honeybees, his camera takes him to the wild insects and unveils their wonderous world of diverse shapes and behaviors. And there, he realizes how profoundly affected he becomes when witnessing a bee's death in the vast desserts of monocultures. Asgeir’s determination pays off, seamlessly weaving between iconic landscapes and intimate animal portraits. But the call from the wild carries a warning. Upon his autumn return home, Asgeir invites us to contemplate whether we are willing to change course for nature's and our own sake.
