Norwegian Documentary Facing War to Open CPH:DOX 2025

Festivals Documentaries

The documentary Facing War, directed by Tommy Gulliksen, has been selected as the opening film at this year's CPH: DOX.

The film participates in the main competition at CPH:DOX and will have its World Premiere in Copenhagen on 19 March.

– We are honored that Facing War has been selected as the opening film at such an important film festival as CPH: DOX. We look forward to presenting this film to an international audience, says director Tommy Gulliksen.

About Facing War

As Russia’s war in Ukraine rages on, U.S. President Joe Biden persuades Jens Stoltenberg to extend his tenure as NATO Secretary General for one final year. During a visit to Kyiv, Stoltenberg vows that the Alliance will stand by President Zelensky ‘for as long as it takes.’

But as Western support falters and divisions among allies deepen, his promise hangs in the balance. All NATO decisions must be unanimous. Stoltenberg must navigate the conflicts and rally all the member nations behind him.

With unprecedented access to NATO’s inner sanctum, this film takes you inside the high-stakes power struggles between global leaders like Macron, Biden, Zelensky, Erdoğan, and Orbán. The film tells a story about the art of diplomacy in a time where safety and democracy is at risk. Can Stoltenberg keep his word to Zelensky?

‘Facing War’ is directed by Tommy Gulliksen and is produced by Dox Division, producers Anne Marte Blindheim and Danielle Turkov Wilson, executive producers Tonje Hessen Schei, Jenny Raskin, Geralyn Dreyfous, Jim & Susan Swartz, in coproduction with NRK and SVT.

– We are delighted to kick off this year’s festival with the world premiere of such a highly relevant film, says Niklas Engstrøm, Artistic Director of CPH:DOX.

Norwegian Film Institute support

CPH: DOX (19-30 March) is one of Europe's leading festivals for documentary film.  Over the last years, Norwegian documentaries have made a strong mark at CPH: DOX, with several films in the competition programs.

– CPH:DOX is one of the most important documentary festivals internationally, and being selected as the opening film will attract global attention to Facing War. Through our support for Facing War, NFI has contributed to an important film for our time, says Kjersti Mo, director of the Norwegian Film Institute.

Facing War has received NOK 3.380.000 in production support from the Norwegian Film Institute.
