Wave of recognition for Palestinian-Norwegian Documentary Film

Festivals Documentaries

The Palestinian-Norwegian documentary No Other Land is achieving great success worldwide, with the European Film Awards and the Oscar shortlist now on the horizon.

No Other Land tells the story of a Palestinian activist who teams up with an Israeli investigative journalist. Together, they fight against Israel's settlement policies, which displace Palestinians on the West Bank daily, leaving them homeless.

The film powerfully portrays Palestinian activism and emphasizes how the spirit of activism is passed down from generation to generation. Over several years, an Israeli-Palestinian film collective—comprising two Palestinian and two Israeli filmmakers—documented the injustices faced daily by Palestinians in the West Bank, culminating in the dramatic developments of autumn 2023. The film was produced by the Norwegian company Antipode Films, with producers Bård Kjøge Rønning and Fabien Greenberg at the helm. No Other Land is directed by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal.

Exceeded expectations

"The success of No Other Land and the massive impact the film has made exceed both our expectations and those of everyone else. This weekend, we will be representing the film at the European Film Awards and the British Independent Film Awards. There's a lot of work going into the ongoing Oscar campaign these days, and we’re excited to see the shortlist announcement on December 17," say producers Rønning and Greenberg.

The film received NOK 375,000 in co-production support from the Norwegian Film Institute. Its festival journey began at the Berlin Film Festival in 2024, where it won the Berlinale Documentary Award and the Panorama Audience Award. It also claimed the Audience Award at major festivals such as CPH:DOX, IDFA, and Visions du Réel.

"This film has clearly resonated with audiences, juries, and critics alike, sweeping up awards at film festivals worldwide. This weekend it can win two prizes at the European Film Awards, where it is nominated for the top honors: European Documentary and European Film," says Elisabeth Aalmo, Manager International Relations, Documentary Films at the Norwegian Film Institute. Her latest count shows the film has already won 28 awards.

"The number of awards is growing week by week," Aalmo adds, looking forward to the announcement of the Oscar nomination shortlist on December 17.
